Know the Double Neighbors (Doubles Plus One Facts)
Doubles facts make up just 10 of the first grade addition facts, but if you include "neighbors of the doubles", you add in 40 more! Double neighbors are the numbers that sit right next to doubles, so kids can start by adding doubles, then adjust one up or down. Ex: For the addition double 5+5, you'll have neighbor doubles 4+5, 5+4, 5+6 and 6+5. Once the firsties recognize when addition facts are "next door neighbors", just one number apart from one another. We say,
"I see neighbors....double them up, and add 1 more!"
Check your firstie's classwork for our Double Plus 1 Worksheet to see examples of doubles plus one facts. Practice at home. Ask him/her to solve the problems you call out from the doubles plus 1 worksheet.
Here are doubles plus 1 youtube videos I found:

Addition Strategies are Useful
Look at this addition table. I colored coded all the strategies that we have learned so far. Look how many facts the fristies can solve using a strategy! There's just 12 that are not colored in.
