All About Community Sharing in First Grade
Community sharing days are on a rotation schedule, so please refer to the quarterly calendars that will be sent home each quarter for your child’s assigned day and topic. Keep calendars in a safe place until the end of each quarter. Calendars are sent home in advance, students are expected to plan, prepare, and practice for their presentations.
Presentations should be one to two minutes long, on the assigned topic. They should include an introduction, supporting details, and a closing. A closing should summarize the main idea of the presentation. An appropriate example would be, “I had a terrific time at the beach with my family.”
“Thank you for listening to my presentation. Do you have any questions?” is not considered an appropriate closing.
Presentations are to be accompanied by a visual display such as objects, drawings, or photographs. Visuals must be relevant to the topic and should be referred to during the presentation to convey ideas, thoughts, or feelings to support the assigned topic. Toys/Contraband items should not be brought to school (please see Mililani Mauka Elementary's parent handbook for a complete list of items). Adult support in creating a visual is welcome; however, your child must be actively involved in the process.
If your child is absent on his/her assigned day, please have him/her ready to share upon returning to school. If your child is present, but not prepared to share, he/she will be assigned another day to share. The assignment grade will be considered Well Below Proficiency until your child shares. Please impress upon your child the importance of being a Self-Directed Learner by being prepared to share on his/her assigned day, as a "late" sharing will negatively impact his/her GLO#1 (Self-Directed Learner) grade for the quarter.
For more information, please refer to the pages entitled “Community Sharing” and “Community Sharing Tips” in your child’s First Grade Handbook that was sent home at the beginning of the school year.
