Subitizing
We are working on subitizing. It is a strategy to figure out totals without counting each item. It is a very, very important skill. Subitizing helps to develop strong computational skills. Which is important for firsties to learn!

Teen Numbers
Numbers 10 to 20 are sometimes tricky for firsties because we write them reverse of how we say them. We write 1 then 6 and say, "sixteen." All numbers from 20 to 99 are written the way we say them. We write 4 then 5, and we say forty five.
The teen numbers are interesting too. After ten we say, "eleven, twelve." Then we say "thirteen, fourteen, etc..." Eleven and twelve are the tricky teens!
Ten Frames Are a Good Thing!
We use ten frames to help organize quantities. It helps to visually show that a two digit numeral is a group of tens and ones.
