Math News: Quarter 1 Module 3
Module 3 Parent Information Letter
Before every new module, a parent letter is sent home with your firstie. The parent letter shares what we are doing in math. It includes math vocabulary for the module and also some things you could do to help supplement what we are doing in class.

Module 3 Concepts We Need To Know:
Working With Tens and Ones
These firsties are making the number 37 in different ways!
We can read, write, and represent two-digit numbers in many ways.....ten frames, fingers, numeral expanders, unifix cubes, base ten blocks, etc... The base-10 number system is an important math concept for firsties. It is important that firsites know that ten ones is the same as one ten.
Watch This!
Here's a video that stresses that all teen numbers have a group of ten. This is a very important concept that all firsties need to know.

Skip Count By Tens Then Count On By Ones
Once the students understand the concept of 10 ones is the same as 1 ten, the next step is skip counting the tens and then counting on by ones. They learn that they do not have to count each cube when it is in a group of 10. Efficient counters can skip count the tens and then count on the ones. Here's a video that reviews this skill.

Estimating and Measuring with Nonstandard Units
Can you guess what we measured?
Our cubits!
The mathematical practice #6, Attention to Precision was embedded in our lesson. We used unifix cubes to measure our cubits. What are cubits? It's an ancient unit of length of the forearm from the elbow to the tip of the middle finger.
